Bob Evans: Quality Food And Service In A Friendly Atmosphere

By Mary Ann O'Toole Holley

If you have eaten out, you have likely eaten at Bob Evans.

Born of a friendly farmer and a roadside sausage stand, Bob Evans Restaurants now numbers nearly 600, not including their 100 or more Mimi's Cafés found throughout the United States.

At Bob Evans Restaurants, quality home-style food and friendly service are trademarks. From classic breakfast favorites like sausage, eggs and hotcakes, to tasty dinner classics such as slow-roasted turkey and dressing, Bob Evans has made a name for itself as a great substitute for mom's home cooking.

Jason French, general manager of Bob Evans Restaurant, adjacent to Mid Rivers Mall in St. Peters, hardly sits still when he is on duty. Whether he is serving a customer at the comfortable counter or dishing out a slice of freshly made apple pie, French takes his customers seriously and aims to please.

"I'm responsible for the operation," French said. "My main focus is talking and greeting guests, but I do carry-out orders or whatever it takes."

French says breakfast is what Bob Evans does best, though lunch and dinner are equally as popular. Bob Evans Restaurant provides quality food at a fair price. The average check per guest for breakfast is $6.12, lunch is $6.85 and dinner is $7.34. Their kids' menu has 12 meals starting at $1.99.

"We sell lots of sausage, but we're known for our quality - hot quality food, clean atmosphere and friendly service," French said.

New items are introduced four times a year, like the most recent additions that include "Knife & Fork Sandwiches," a tasty treat. Our new Knife & Fork Sandwiches start with grilled Texas toast layered with generous helpings of Bob Evans favorites and piled so high with home-style goodness, you will need a knife and fork to eat them.

Try all three Country Benedicts, a twist on a breakfast classic. Benedicts begin with a rich open-faced buttermilk biscuit. Next comes a layer of favorite breakfast flavors, and then topped with two eggs cooked-to-order with a side of golden-brown home fries.

Their meatloaf on top of mashed potatoes and ladled with gravy demands an appetite, French said. It is sure to fill you up.

"We are trying home-style cooking with a twist," French said. "Instead of the regular eggs Benedict, we're adding a biscuit. Our slow-roasted products are big sellers and our chicken pot pies are always favorites."

Old favorites like sausage patties, links and signature sausage gravy are what bring many to the friendly neighborhood restaurant. French says Bob Evans brings in the big crowds because new affordable entrees and classic favorites are always being introduced to customers.

"Everything is good," French said. "If it's not, we do what we can to make it better."

With dinner entrees like slow-roasted pork loin, layers of home-style mashed potatoes and savory bread and celery dressing, all smothered with rich pork gravy, no one goes home hungry from Bob Evans.

However, Bob Evans doesn't serve just comfort food.

Salads are big at Bob Evans. The Chili & Cheese Taco Salad provides a twist on a classic with garden-fresh greens tossed in avocado ranch dressing, topped with tender corn, spicy pepper-jack cheese, grape tomatoes, crispy tortilla strips, sour cream and scallions served over Bob Evan's special sausage chili. Fried cornmeal croutons add just a touch of sweetness.

"Our cranberry pecan salad is incredible," French said.

Bob Evans Farms, Inc. owns and operates 588 Bob Evans Restaurants in the 19-state area of Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia and 104 Mimi's Café Restaurants in 17 states, primarily in California and other western states.

French says at Bob Evans they strive for customer satisfaction by using the same philosophy they have had since the beginning - quality food and service in a friendly atmosphere.

Bob Evans Restaurants are open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
