Seasons at Old Hickory offers a wonderful dining experienceBy Mary Ann O’Toole Holley
It’s said that the golf course at Old Hickory Golf Club in St. Peters is one of the best around—a course with more character than the South Carolina lowlands—with its ninth and 18th holes counted among the most impressive in St. Louis. But even if you don’t golf, its beauty is worth a gander—especially while sipping some fine wine or enjoying an entrée like Herb Crusted Chicken Breast ($15.95) at Seasons Restaurant inside the clubhouse of the Old Hickory Golf Club. The club and its course may be private, but Chef Tim Shelp welcomes everyone—members and non-members alike for a casual lunch or a delightful dinner overlooking the green spans of the golf course. Seasons offers a variety of savory appetizers and exquisite entrees to soothe the soul and exhilarate the palate. “My family roots go back to New Orleans, so I’m big on Southern comfort food with a refined style,” said Shelp, a new addition to the Seasons who took the helm of the restaurant just last week. Shelp, whose expertise goes back some time, most recently as the Chef de Cuisine at the Racket Club in Ladue, says he will gradually integrate his own touches into the often changing menu to offer customers a taste of his innate New Orleans-style of cooking. “I’ll be integrating creole spices into classic sauces and bringing in some of my old family recipes,” Shelp said. His father was a restaurateur in St. Charles years ago, running the old Huck Finn Restaurant in St. Charles’ Mark Twain Plaza; his great grandmother and grandmother were both wonderful cooks who lived their lives and learned the art of fine cooking in front of steaming cast iron stores in New Orlean’s French Quarter. Now, Shelp will pass on those delicacies, adding his own unique flare to entrees like Vivian’s Oyster Stew, a recipe his great grandmother used, and Maggie’s Shrimp Creole, a dish his grandmother would often prepare. “Creole and Cajun food don’t always have to be hot, hot, hot,” Shelp said. “The heat is offset by something sweet, and more depth is used to create the dishes than the usual Cajun fare found in most restaurants.” Overall, Seasons Restaurant has plenty to choose from already, like Grilled Portabella with grilled onion, roasted sweet pepper, Cahill porter, pepper mayo, lettuce and tomato served on a whole wheat roll ($8.95) or the Steak and Mushroom Wrap with beef, mushrooms, Swiss cheese, romaine lettuce and ranch dressing in an herb wrap served with beer battered onion rings ($10.95). The Seasons offers a full range of drinks and features a lovely bar area for those in search of unique libations. Erin Kirk, an administrative assistant for the Old Hickory Golf Club said she’s eaten at the restaurant daily since she started several years ago. “We get a nice crowd, and we have some fantastic food,” Kirk said. The buffalo chicken pizza is extraordinary with its crispy crust, ranch dressing, grilled chicken strips smothered in buffalo sauce and layered with cheese ($9.95), Kirk said. For those who prefer more traditional items, the sausage and pepperoni and bacon pizza is wonderful ($10.95) and the baked potato skins appetizer with Wisconsin cheddar and applewood smoked bacon ($7.95) is ever so tasty. Plenty of traditional sandwiches are served ($8.95 to $10.95). Artisan fruit and cheese platters ($12.95) are great for munching on the club’s veranda while testing their extensive wine list. And the spinach and artichoke dip ($8.95) would be wonderful for whiling away the hours with a soft drink or martini. The Seasons at Old Hickory Golf Club brings a relaxing atmosphere to any meal. Tucked away, out of sight, off Mid Rivers Mall Drive, the restaurant offers its unique charm, beautiful view and delicious options to everyone. Membership is not required for restaurant dining. Private meetings and parties (for 12 to 600 people) can also be booked in their private room.
