El Maguey offers moderately priced Mexican cuisineBy Mary Ann O’Toole Holley
Finding good Mexican food in the St. Charles County area is rarely a problem, but finding great, moderately priced Mexican food in an environment fit for a four-star restaurant is a rarity—unless you’re at El Maguey Mexican Restaurant in Lake Saint Louis.
Contrary to some of its franchised counterparts, this El Maguey establishment is a needle in a haystack. Situated on the bluffs overlooking Lake Saint Louis, its aesthetic appeal is found not just among its hand-carved tables with glass tops, beautiful mosaics and stained glass ceiling. Dine at this delightful establishment and you’ll gaze out high above the lake, viewing the peaceful blue waters of Lake Saint Louis. “Our customers say they like our food because it is tasty and the selection is great,” said manager Jesus Delapaz. “But we are unique because we are here by the lake. It is a beautiful view, and our customers enjoy the relaxing atmosphere.” Conveniently located between I-70 and Hwy. 40/61, El Maguey offers a selection of South of the Border entrees with everything from authentic chalupas ($6.50) to Mexican chicken soup (Caldo de Pollo ($6.10). El Maguey’s “Especialties of the House” are interesting and inviting, like the Bistec and Camarones ($11.99) featuring an 8-ounce ribeye steak topped with 10 gulf shrimp, cooked with a special sauce and served with rice and beans. The options go on and on at El Maguey, whether you want a taco ala carte for $1.85 or a combination meal with an enchilada, taco and chile releno ($7.50). For those who want to try it all, the restaurant offers “A Little of Everything” dinner with a chalupa and guacamole salad, chile releno, beef taco, enchilada, tamale, rice and fried beans ($10.25). Another unique option at El Maguey is the selection of steaks offered at $9.25. Each is served with a Mexican flair, and the flavorings are far from the typical “steak and potatoes” elsewhere. The Steak Mexicano features a T-bone topped with grilled onions, tomatoes and bell peppers, served with rice, beans and tortillas. Salads are super at El Maguey at $2.50 for a simple tossed salad and $6.75 for the taco salad fajitas, served on a crisp flour tortilla with melted cheese sauce, topped with chicken, steak, sauteed onions, bell peppers, tomatoes and covered with lettuce, shredded cheese, sour cream, guacamole and tomatoes. Vegetarian dinners are well-suited for those opting against meat, and a nice children’s menu ($3.75) offers Mexican fare and American options like hot dogs or chicken fingers and French fries. El Maguey features a full bar with everything one could ask for, including a choice of domestic and imported beer, mixed drinks, 10 types of tequila and flavored margaritas. Lunch specials (11 to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday) and dinner specials can be enjoyed for a mere $5 to $6. El Maguey at Lake Saint Louis can hardly be beat if you’re searching for a fun, festive and beautiful environment for lunch, dinner or casual meetingplace. Always opt for the El Maguey patio on a sunny day or warm summer evening. A stream trickles past you from a limestone ravine below. Water flows into the beautiful waters of Lake Saint Louis, and all will be well with the world.
