Sakura Japanese Steakhouse satisfies all the senses

By Mary Ann O'Toole Holley

Traditionally, Japanese food is fresh, healthy and low in fat, but one bite of the fine food fare at Sakura Japanese Steakhouse in St. Peters and all you care about is how wonderful it tastes.

Sakura Japanese Steakhouse practices the Japanese philosophy that food should satisfy all the senses. Whether you feast in the spacious booths of the dining room, join in a meal fit for an emperor at the hibachi grill or partake in the sumptuous sushi from their Japanese kitchen, Sakura does indeed satisfy all the senses.

A welcome addition to the area’s restaurant scene, Sakura Japanese Steakhouse has so much to offer: polite servers, personable and highly-skilled hibachi chefs, an extensive menu of Japanese cuisine and diverse dining-style options.

“We are actually like three restaurants in one,” says manager Scott Chen. “Food is always prepared with great care and beautifully presented wherever you choose to sit, and we like our restaurant to be a spacious, comfortable place where people aren’t bumping into one another.”

Walk into Sakura Japanese Steakhouse and you’ll find the aroma of beef grilling on the teppanyaki tempting, but glance at the menu and you’ll be struggling to select just one or two of their outstanding entrees.

“The concept of this restaurant came from New York,” Chen says. “You can come with a group with a variety of tastes and still find what you want on our menu.”

Whether you’re a steak and potatoes kind of guy, prefer something like noodle soup or sushi or want to sip some sake (rice wine) at the well-stocked bar, Sakura’s can accommodate.

The diverse menu includes 22 appetizers ranging from edamame (boiled fresh soy beans $3.95) to Gyoza, a pan fried chicken dumpling with gyoza sauce ($4.50).

There are also ala cart sushi items like sweet shrimp ($2.50) to Sea Urchin ($3.25), but if raw fish isn’t your dish, try the lengthy selection of cooked rolls like the eel avocado roll ($4.50), the Philadelphia roll ($5.50) or the Bomb Roll ($11.95) featuring lobster tempura and crab wrapped with a thinly sliced cucumber in Japanese spicy mayonnaise sauce.

The “Fantastic Roll” lives up to its name filled with spicy tuna, spicy salmon, spicy yellowtail, and tempura flakes and avocado and marble seaweed with five sauces ($14.95).

“It’s as big as a hero sandwich and twice as filling,” Chen says. “Most every customer leaves with a to-go box.”

Dinner entrees like the Sushi Love Boat for two features 18 pieces of sushi, one California roll and one green dragon roll ($35.95). Hibachi dinners all include a shrimp appetizer, house soup, and salad with Japanese dressing, fried rice and side vegetables. Everything from a veggie dinner to Teriyaki salmon and all combinations in-between will be prepared as you watch, seated at the grill ($12.95-$25.95)

Sakura can help diners discover the wonders of Japanese cuisine in an entertaining, friendly setting. The dining areas are light, bright and airy. Lining one area of the main dining area is an exhaustive sushi bar where one can observe the sushi chef (itamae) as he artfully shapes sushi rolls into delicate morsels. Sakura combines the freshest ingredients in ways that delight the eyes as well as the taste buds. Seasonings are generally very simple in order to enhance the natural flavors.

Hibachi specials are served Monday through Thursday ($15.95-$18.95)

Reservations are recommended for more than two dining at the hibachi. Call 636-278-6688. Look for a $5 off coupon in this issue of Mid Rivers Newsmagazine.
