Bombay Grill Offers A Wide Variety Of Indian DelightsBy Mary Ann O'Toole Holley
After being a long-time patron of O’Fallon’s Bombay Grill, she bought the business in September. Bombay Grill in O’Fallon, St. Charles County’s only Indian restaurant, is a gem of a place where just one trace of their food makes your mouth water. “I live in Maryland Heights, and used to come all the way here for the Indian food,” Patel said. “The chef, Ram Piara, is the only reason I got involved with this project. He is the number one cook in St. Louis.” Patel has come a long way from her traditional life in India. Now, the owner of two businesses, Bombay Grill and India Bazaar, at Page and Lindbergh, she continues her persistence as a dedicated businesswoman who brings only the best to her restaurant. “I’ve always had a dream of opening a restaurant,” Patel said. “People who know me come here because they know I won’t compromise on quality.” Bombay Grill offers fully-authentic, personally prepared northern Indian cuisine featuring curry in many of its selections. Curry, however, does not begin to sum up the amazing variety of spicy flavors found at this unique culinary haven. Add thick, moderately spicy and creamy gravies, dried fruits and nuts, milk, cream, clarified butter and yogurt to many of the restaurant’s entrees, and Bombay Grill’s outstanding selections lift one’s taste buds from the mundane to the magnificent. Bombay Grill offers a dazzling daily lunch buffet, and special dinner buffets are offered Sunday and Tuesday from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Made-to-order entrees can always be chosen from their extensive five-page dinner menu. The restaurant’s wide selection of vegetable, chicken, lamb, goat and seafood entrees are all served with basmati rice. The freshly baked pita-style breads stuffed with different kinds of vegetarian and non-vegetarian fillings are fabulously different, and most foods at Bombay Grill are baked in their authentic Indian clay tandoor, a cylindrical “oven” with charcoal in the bottom as the heat source. The oven heats to a temperature of about 800 degrees and prepares the perfect “Indian barbecue.” In addition to the seasoned flavor the tandoor imparts, Tandoori cooking does not use much oil or fat making Indian cuisine the perfect choice when pursuing a low calorie diet. Try the onion kulcha leavened bread stuffed with mild herbs and onions ($2.99) or the delectable cheese nan leavened bread stuffed with mozzarella cheese ($2.99) for a starter, add an appetizer like the tandoori chicken wings marinated and broiled over mesquite ($4.99) or other tandoori specialties like chicken tikka, featuring succulent pieces of delicately spiced boneless chicken ($12.99). All the special dinners are served with your choice of soup or salad, a choice of bread, but if you make it to the buffet, you can try all of the above and more. “A lot of people think you have to go to the city to enjoy Indian food,” Patel said. “That’s certainly not true anymore. When I had my open house, I had 1,700 guests, and people were lined up out the door. People came from as far as Chesterfield and beyond.” Patrons have enjoyed the buffet so much, Patel is considering adding a 7-day dinner buffet because of the variety it affords. “It gives people an opportunity to try different foods,” Patel said. “A lot of people are new to Indian food, and with the buffet it allows you to ‘browse’ the options rather than ordering an entire dinner they may not like.” Patel also serves a line of Indian beers like Taj Mahal, Kingfisher, Tiger and Flying Horse Royal Lager, distinct beers that you’ll definitely enjoy; and a quality wine list. Desserts like mango malwa ice cream with mango pulp and almonds ($3.99) top it all off.
