Playoff's Sports Bar and Grill: Friendly Food And DrinkBy Mary Ann O'Toole Holley
What more could anyone want? Playoff's Sports Bar and Grill in O'Fallon is one of those perfect places to while away the hours, sip some suds or enjoy a good conversation. If that's not enough, just ask the three co-owners. "This is not our livelihood - just a place to come and drink and hang out and eat good food," said Elmore. "Good food, good people, good drink: that's us!" Elmore, Seifried and Ellis wanted a place where everybody feels comfortable. "We get our regular crowd during the day, and all kinds of people at night," said manager Deanna Long. "If you come in more than once, you'll see somebody you know. We might have bikers at one table and businessmen at another." Playoff's Sports Bar and Grill is large and spacious and suitable for bellying up to the bar or chatting intimately at a corner-of-the-room table. There are dartboards and four pool tables, foosball and more. There's a 102-inch projection television that runs the MLB Ticket satellite channel and five smaller televisions scattered about. Every Saturday night there's a Blues or Rock band playing from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., but in between there's a fine, fine jukebox blasting the best of tunes over integrated speakers. If singing is your thing, go for Karaoke on Wednesdays from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. and Sunday from 7 to 11:30 p.m. "They all want to be stars," Elmore says with a laugh. The twisting, turning bar serves traditional beer and liquor and local brews like Schafly and O'Fallon Gold. But, Long says if a customer wants it, she'll order it, as long as they say they're coming back. "We try to stock up on what people like," said Long. "The regular customers know we're here to please." Lunch is served daily, seven days a week, and food flows from the kitchen whenever there's an order. Rueben sandwiches are popular, as are the hot wings, Long said. But the menu goes on and on, filled with double-burgers, turkey sandwiches, pizza and more. All are reasonably priced at about $7 each. A house salad can be had for a mere $3. Add fresh bacon for 50 cents. There are daily drink specials like puckers and well drinks and a 24-ounce mega draft. On Thursdays, the specials are "Purple Hooters." Don't tell mom, but they're likely to be tasty. Playoff's Sports Bar and Grill even gives its food away. Free hot wings are complimentary from 4 to 6 p.m. on Fridays, a nacho buffet is spread out on Wednesdays from 4 to 6 p.m., and a graduated Happy Hour with special drink prices on the hour from Monday through Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. "You get to know people easy in this place," said Elmore. "Think of us as the Fast Eddies of O'Fallon." There are in-house pool leagues on Monday nights, along with Texas Hold 'Em games. Dart tournaments and electronic dart boards. Every Saturday from 4 to 10 is steak night, when a 16-ounce New York Strip steak, a baked potato and salad is served for $11.99. "We basically break even, but it brings people in," Seifried said. "And customers don't have to be afraid to drink. We cut a deal with American Cab. For $10 they'll take you anyplace in O'Fallon." Playoff's Sports Bar & Grill in O'Fallon is open at 10 a.m. daily, Monday through Saturday and at 11 a.m. on Sundays. Find fun, friends, foods and spirits at 40 Crossroads Plaza on Hwy. K, just north of Hwy. N. Look for the red and white shopping mall. For information, or to tell them you're on your way, call 636-272-7739. |
