Masterpiece Bar-B-Que Serves Up The Best In Town

By Mary Ann O'Toole Holley

They’ve served heads of state, ladled up “Q” in the Cardinal’s locker room and even dished out rib slabs and pulled pork on the White House lawn.

Now, regular folks are gushing over their grub at their comfy restaurant along Mid Rivers Mall Drive, proving that you can be a barbecue genius in a suburban strip mall.

“We’re here,” says Masterpiece Bar-B-Que owner Sherri Poff, who with her husband Ricky hold the secrets of who some say is the founding father of barbecue. “But don’t let our looks deceive you.”

Ricky and Sherri have been in the barbecue business for nearly 15 years working alongside barbecue great, Dr. Rich Davis, creator of the world renowned KC Masterpiece Barbecue. When Davis retired, long after he began marketing his famous bottled sauce through retail markets, he encouraged the Poffs to continue the “barbecue lovers dream” through their own venue.

Their simple confines at the 348 Mid Rivers Mall Dr., inside the St. Peters Village Plaza strip mall, rustles up a world of foods that are always smoking in the Masterpiece Bar-B-Que kitchen.

Ricky, Sherri and fellow barbecue lovers Malcolm (KSDK sports broadcaster) and Matuschka Briggs made the Mid Rivers Mall location the first of what will soon grow to several Masterpiece Bar-B-Que restaurants scattered from West St. Louis County to Wentzville.

A new restaurant is currently being built in Wentzville and is scheduled to open in about July. But don’t look at Masterpiece Bar-B-Que as a chain, Poff warns. It’s mom and pop from the first basting of the beef brisket to the last lathering of sauce on the ribs. It’s just that mom and pop have made it to mainstream, Poff said.

“We fed President George W. Bush on the White House lawn and 13 members of Congress about three years ago,” Sherri Poff said. “Ricky was Dr. Davis’ right-hand man. He helped create the recipes and the menus for KC Masterpiece, and now we bring Ricky’s own variation on the version to the area.”

Their Q-stations are also found in two Dierberg’s locations (Clarkson at Chesterfield Marketplace and on Eager Road at Dierberg’s Brentwood Point), but for now, Masterpiece Bar-B-Que’s St. Peters flagship leads the way in these parts, leaving a trail of smoked, barbecued and babied baby-backs for all to enjoy.

“It’s good to have a restaurant here in St. Peters,” Sherri Poff said. “We were catering out of this location, but people kept knocking on the doors asking when they could come in and eat.”

Poff said Masterpiece Bar-B-Que started as a catering business and continues to do so from a large commissary on the outskirts of St. Peters.

Barbecue doesn’t have to mean backyard-casual, Poff said. They’ve served smoked pork tenderloins and herb-roasted chicken at weddings, and Ricky does a smoked prime rib “to die for,” Poff said. Whether you’re looking for smoked shrimp kabobs for a fancy gala or a basket of beef brisket for lunch, Masterpiece Bar-B-Que can handle it all.

“I think barbecue for catering and carry out work nicely because it travels well,” Poff said. “Oh, and did I tell you we deliver.”

Delivery is available not just for catering events. Order a meal for two or a feast for five and Masterpiece Bar-B-Que will head out to your home with Q that’s hot, and a lot. There’s also loads of side items (priced at around $1.30) like barbecue baked beans, fries, Cole slaw, fries and even dirty spice rice, a blend of secret spices, meats and white rice.

“We bring it all, from simple box lunches to an almost unlimited amount, and we put a lot of love into it” Poff said. “In fact, we recently catered a VIP party at Harrah’s for 10,000 people.”

Buy it by the pound ($10.99) or by the family pack ($26.99), Poff said. Masterpiece Bar-B-Que makes it easy on the family and tangy on their tongues. St. Louis-style pork steaks, ribs with meat that falls off the bone, pulled pork and pulled chicken are big sellers, she said.

“What sets us apart is that we’re mom and pop with a multi-million dollar background, bringing experience in barbecue to the multitudes,” Poff said. “That’s what gives us the edge.”

There’s no need to call ahead. Grab and go is their motto, and don’t forget Masterpiece Bar-B-Que for campouts. The Poffs will provide ready-to-eat vacuum-packed entrees that can be frozen, opened and popped on the grill.
