Sports Brief

 

The month of May is probably one of the busiest months in high school sports with a total of 10 state championships being decided in about a four-week period.

 

Baseball

 

Ranked 39th in the nation according to Rivals.com, the Francis Howell Vikings (21-3, 5-1 Gateway Athletic Conference) ran away with the GAC North title in the final weeks of the season and proceeded to win the Class 4, District 2 championship with an 8-0 win over Francis Howell North (15-9, 2-3 GAC South) on May 16.

 

Viking starting pitcher Austin Buenemann gave up zero runs on five hits in seven innings pitched. Buenemann retired three batters via strikeout in his fifth win of the 2008 season. He’s currently 5-1 overall with a 0.66 earned run average.

 

Howell’s Nathan Orf was 2-4 against Howell North with a run scored and is currently batting .512 with 20 RBI.

 

The Vikings defeated Jackson, Mo., 8-3 in the state sectional game last week.

 

The Class 4, District 9 championship was won by Holt (21-3, 5-1 GAC South) as the Indians slammed Fort Zumwalt West (21-5, 2-3 GAC South) 11-1 on May 16.

 

Holt starting pitcher Jim Foster needed just five innings to tame the Jaguars as he gave up one run on two hits and recorded a total of four strikeouts. Foster’s win moved his record to 5-1 overall with a stout 1.23 ERA.

 

The Indians Kevin Paule drove in four of Holt’s 11 runs on one triple and one sacrifice in three appearances at the plate.

 

Holt defeated Hickman 9-3 in the Class 4 state sectional game last week.

 

Over in Class 3, the St. Dominic Crusaders (22-3, 9-0 AAA) fought their way to the District 7 championship with a 1-0 win over Winfield on May 16.

 

St. Dominic starting pitcher Kyle Kiely threw a complete game of seven innings as he shut out the Warriors on a two-hit performance that recorded a total of six strikeouts. Kiely also drove in the Crusader’s lone run of the game and is currently 4-1 overall with a 1.70 ERA and a .372 batting average.

 

The Crusaders thumped St. Francis Borgia 7-3 in the Class 3 state sectional on Tuesday of last week.

 

 

Boy’s Golf

 

Congratulations are in order for Holt’s Chris Seiffert who took eighth overall with a two round total of 151 in the Class 4 state championships at Island Green Golf Course in Republic. Francis Howell’s Corey Heiland was right behind Seiffert at 10th place with a score of 152. Howell Central’s Chad Denny was 14th overall with a score of 153.

 

The Duchesne Pioneers took fifth overall at the Class 3 championships with a two round total of 660 at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield. Duchesne’s Luke Orf took runners-up honors with a two round total of 151. Mike Glosier, Patrick Sullivan, Chad Miller and Nick Reilly were members of Duchesne’s team at state.

 

St. Charles West placed seventh overall at the Class 3 championships with a two round total of 667 as Jeremy Percy led the Warriors with a 25th place finish. Mike Smith, Jordan Roche, Drew Goellner and Justin Geuecker were also members of St. Charles West’s team at state.

 

At the Class 2 championships at Deer Lake Golf Course in Springfield, the Lutheran-St. Charles Cougars took eighth overall with a two round total of 701. Lutheran’s Sam Deitte led the Cougars with a 20th place finish overall and a two round total of 164. The Cougars Austin Johnson, Dan Friedrich, Dylan Mozier, Mike Thompson were all members of the Lutheran-St. Charles team at state.

 

 

Girls Soccer

 

The defending state champion St. Dominic Crusaders (19-5, 8-0 AAA) won the Class 1, District 9 championship with a convincing 4-0 win over Union as Ali Bauer racked up three goals against the Wildcats.

 

Signe’ Novak also scored one goal and one assist for the Crusaders in the win over Union as goalkeeper Jenna Jones posted her ninth shutout of the season.

 

St. Dominic opened up the Class 1 sectional with a commanding 8-0 win over Hannibal.

 

Duchesne (16-4, 6-0 GAC North) captured the Class 1, District 8 championship with a 2-0 win over St. Charles West (13-6, 4-2 GAC North) as Erica Sams and Emma Walker each scored for the Pioneers as goalkeeper Tori Champagne recorded her ninth shutout of the 2008 campaign.

 

The Pioneers pulled off a bittersweet win over Visitation Academy in the state sectional with a 3-1 victory over the Vivettes. Duchesne had lost the state sectional game to Visitation the previous two seasons.

 

Over in the Class 2 state championships, defending state champion Fort Zumwalt West (13-11, 5-1 GAC South) won the District 5 championship with a 4-1 win Fort Zumwalt North (16-9, 3-2 GAC North). The Jaguars received two goals from Rachel King with Brittany Colvin and Maggie Lau scoring one goal each in the win over the Panthers. Zumwalt North’s Emily Kersting scored the lone goal for the Panthers.

 

Francis Howell North won the Class 2, District 4 championship with a 3-0 win over Hazelwood West as Morgan Boudreau, Kelsey Fouch and Breann Kinworthy each scored for the Knights as goalkeeper Katie Gallagher posted her 11th shutout of the year.

 

The Knights advanced to the Class 2 quarterfinals with a 1-0 win over Lindbergh.
